Concept
Somewhere to play in the evening, with a drink
Go clubs in Japan are, almost without exception, daytime places that serve no alcohol. They are good at what they do — they are places to concentrate on the game. But if you want to play in the evening, after work, with a drink in front of you and no particular hurry, there is very little.
That gap is what this salon is for. We are starting modestly, in an existing space rather than a purpose-built one, because we would rather spend what we have on the hours you actually spend here.

The full street address will be published here before the soft opening. Nishi-Shinsaibashi is in the south of central Osaka, a short walk from Shinsaibashi and Namba stations.

For visitors from abroad
Coming without Japanese
You will be fine. Go is go: the board, the stones and the rules are the same ones you already know, and two people with no language in common can play a full game without any difficulty at all.
To be straight with you: our staff speak mainly Japanese. Conversation away from the board may not go very far, and we would rather say so than have you arrive expecting otherwise. What we can promise is a welcome, an opponent, and a board.

Where is Go Salon SEIEN?

Can I come if I cannot play go?
Yes. You can take a teaching game from a professional, or simply have a drink and watch. People who want to learn from scratch are welcome.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
Not to play. Go needs no shared language. Our staff speak mainly Japanese, so conversation beyond the board may be limited, but you will be found an opponent and made welcome.
How is this different from an ordinary go club?
The time of day, and what the room is for. Most go clubs in Japan open during the day and serve no alcohol; they are places to concentrate on the game. We open in the evening and are as much about the company as the go.
